In a tough move announced this July, Homeland Inc., the popular Southern grocery chain, is closing five stores across Oklahoma and Georgia—dealers include its own brands like United Supermarkets, Discount Foods, and Piggly Wiggly. Employees and locals are stunned: one store in Gordon, GA, will shutter around August 16, while four in Oklahoma (Pauls Valley, Jay, Kingfisher, Ponca City) follow suit on the same date. With around 85 staffers affected, small towns are bracing for the loss of local jobs and essential services. Homeland cited underperformance and long-term viability, thanking customers and pledging support for impacted workers.
