On July 17, exactly five years after the passing of civil rights icon and Congressman John Lewis, thousands across the nation are set to honor his legacy the way he would’ve wanted—by getting into “good trouble.”
In over 1,600 cities and towns, protesters will gather to speak out against a range of issues, including President Trump’s recent budget bill, growing restrictions on women’s rights and diversity initiatives, and harsh immigration enforcement measures—like the deployment of the California National Guard in response to pro-immigrant demonstrations in Los Angeles.
“What we want the nation to know is that his legacy lives on,” said Barbara Arnwine of the Transformative Justice Coalition. “The good trouble that he got into and that he fought for is not ove
r.”
