Nearly half of the 78 million people enrolled in Medicaid and the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) are children — many of them living with complex medical needs. Shockingly, one in five children in the U.S. has special health care needs, and about half rely on Medicaid or CHIP for coverage, according to Georgetown University’s Center for Children and Families. But with major Medicaid cuts on the horizon, millions of families are facing an uncertain future. Federal estimates project that up to 12–20 million Americans could lose coverage by 2034, leaving children with disabilities and their caregivers without essential support. The consequences could be devastating for those who need help the most.
