The Most Common Vascular Disease in America — And You’ve Probably Never Heard of It

It affects millions of people across the U.S., yet most have no idea they have it. Health experts now say that chronic venous insufficiency (CVI) is the most common vascular disease in the country — even more prevalent than peripheral artery disease. CVI occurs when the valves in your leg veins don’t work properly, making it harder for blood to flow back to your heart. This leads to symptoms like leg swelling, varicose veins, pain, fatigue, and even skin ulcers. While it’s often mistaken for simple aging or poor circulation, untreated CVI can seriously impact quality of life. The good news? It's manageable — especially when caught early.
